    ...when he was forced into donating to PBS.

    Um, it's an honor to give $10,000. Especially now, when the rich mosaic of cable programming has made public television so very, very unnecessary.

      There's still an important role for PBS, though it needs more vigorous defense from within it's own administrators.

      What cable TV so rarely provides is anything approaching an authoritative source.  Try watching an evening of the "History Channel" and see how long you can go without stumbling across Nostradamus, or how long you can go one any of several "science-oriented" channels without running into searches for Bigfoot and families creeping themselves out in "haunted houses."

      We very much need a place where what's broadcast can be trusted, and PBS is one of the few such places available.

      It seems to me that the only shows that treat me like an adult are Bill Moyers Journal on PBS and a series like In Treatment found exclusively on HBO
