    When these giants were first discovered, it was assumed they were too heavy to stand without the assistance of water. So the earliest images we have of such dinosaurs has them standing in swamps, munching on soft water plants.

    Another reason for assuming they lived in swamps was that the bones showed signs of the animals having died (and presumably lived) in swamps.  It turns out that the bones of dinosaurs who die in swamps have a greater chance of surviving to the present day.  Dinosaurs who died in rocky terrain were more likely eaten by scavengers, and their bones crushed to dust, leaving no fossils for us to find.
