Shows aimed at a mass audience may get great talent and have top-notch production values, but even with all these resources, the creators' hands are tied by convention. The mass audience doesn't really want something interesting, innovative or thought-provoking.

While this is often true, there are enough exceptions to make me believe that it is possible for quality, thought-provoking programming to break through -- in comedy, "MASH" would be the premiere example, and it is a program that set a ratings record with its series finale that no one else has ever matched.  In the category of drama, I would rank "Lost" up with "BSG" -- and would note that for every "BSG" that Syfy produces, we get multiple hours of "Stargate" spinoffs and even more hours of reality trash.

Good programming can find a home in almost any environment, if treated with the care the programs deserve.
