I used to reply to the nutjob friend of my mother who would send out crap. He's a big "Christian" so I'd point out that forwarding emails with untruths was bearing false witness, which the Lord is quite clear about in the Bible. Once (before the election) I did a Reply All to his whole list, which included priests and higher-ups and local politicians as well as some congresscritters. I had to send the same message out five times to Reply All. He has a lot of contacts.
The thing that set me off was the "Obama will stand with the Arabs against Americans" lie. Here's the "money" part of my email:
I do know that the quote from Audacity of Hope is taken out of context. It comes from this paragraph:
"Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Perhaps I misinterpreted this, but it sounds to me like the senator is
concerned that bigotry, hatred, and fear could precipitate violence against innocent Americans. Sounds reasonable to me, in context. Anyone else here of German, Italian, Japanese, Irish descent whose family came here in the early 20th century??

Here's one of the responses I got: Crazy Hate anyone??

    > Okay--I don't know you, but I will answer you (but a little
    > more) what I sent to someone else who just sent me this same thing.
    > Wall St. is backing him 3 to 1. The fix
    > is in. this is Bush1 vs. Clinton all over again. McCain is
    > just a
    > fall guy, and is playing his part to a t.
    > Palin is unqualified for
    > anything. And her 5th baby is most likely her grandchild (there
    > is no
    > record of her son's birth in the hospital he was supposed to
    > have been
    > born in; if you check the circumstances of his birth they don't
    > add up--esp. when you consider this woman had 4 previous pregnancies.
    > Oh, and btw, Obama is more Arab than black. And he is cousins
    > with Cheney. He has been groomed from early on (like Clinton,
    > who could very well be the child of Winthrop Rockefeller. Are
    > you starting to see a connection?)
    > 911 really was an inside job, and to understand this financial
    > implosion you need to face the truth about 911.
    > Do not trust either the republicans or the democrats. They are
    > all controlled.
    > Prayer is all we have left.

Eeeyikes. That was probably the most insane of the responses, but there were several hateful ones. I finally put the nutjob friend of hers in my spam list and gave up on trying to educate these people. And I continue to pray for the safety and health of our President and his family. There are a LOT of hateful crazies out there.

    •  Fear. (0+ / 0-)

That's what is behind most of the hate (and related expressions), anyway.  IMHO.

Scapegoats are a'plenty in that severity of emotional state, it seems.

"So, please stay where you are. Don't move and don't panic. Don't take off your shoes! Jobs is on the way."

    •  My mom's not a wingnut (0+ / 0-)

She blasts the wingnuts who email her. Just had to clarify :)

      •  I gotcha (0+ / 0-)

        and I'm jealous    :-}
Mom and I have different surnames so maybe I didn't embarrass her...but too bad. And this winger was at a family party (he's her friend, not Dad's)! I did not go out of my way to say hello. Does that make me a jerk?
