and no one absolves the Gush or anyone else of responsibility. But to say that the Gush and Left think in similar terms is to say that Hamas and Barghouti are the same. It just is not true.

    •  I didn't say that the Israeli left (5+ / 0-)

and Gush think in similar terms. I said the practical results of their preferred policies is the same. The policy of the Israeli Right is to actively support the expansion of the settlements, while the policy of the Israeli Left, by which I mean Avodah, which we all know is no longer "left" in any sense of the term, is to ignore the unpleasantness of the consequences caused by the settlements and their expansion.

The fact that the Israeli Left may recognize that the settlements are unpleasant is meaningless when they refuse to do anything about it.

Going back to jon's comment, the policy of stealing or conquering Palestinian land and then blaming only Palestinians for the lack of peace is something every Israeli leader is guilty of since 1948. You may disagree with that, but I don't believe the early Zionists are blameless when it comes to the 1948 war.

The thing about Karmafish's comment is that it's not unusual, which is why it's so sad. My impression in speaking to Jewish people, both Israeli and not, is that many, if not most of them, believe the occupation continues because of the Palestinians. In other words, Israel being a good and moral country wants to just end the occupation, but Palestinians through their irrational violence and immature stubbornness won't allow it.

I hope you understand why that's not only false, but why it's also patronizing of and offensive to Palestinians.
