    ingrained habit. When I lived in the city (and even now, when I visit the city) I easily walked five miles a day. It was way too much trouble to get in a car. And who wants to stay on a crowded train or bus when you can jump off a stop early and walk? There was always so much to see, so many windows to peer in, so many gardens to examine, so much architecture to appreciate. (It's ironic, isn't it?)

    Here, there's no such thing as running down to the corner store.  Almost nothing is within walking distance.  There aren't sidewalks and if you try to ride a bike or walk, you are molested by mean dogs.

    While it's beautiful at my office and easy to go take a walk, I find that I rarely do it because I'm not passing anything. It makes it feel like a long time.

    I know I need to change my habits but it is so hard when life impinges and seems to hold the old ones in place.

    I recently saw a friend who lost a bunch of weight. I asked her what she did. She said her children grew up and moved out and she separated from her husband. Since she was alone and didn't have to cook, she stopped eating as much and went to dance classes every night instead. Her husband really wanted to get back together. She agreed under the condition that she would never be expected to cook another meal and she would continue going to dance classes every night.

      some dental problems which resulted in dental surgery.  It was inconvenient for her to eat, so she ended up eating about half as much at each meal.  It was tiring for her to chew - said it made her jaws ache - and it took her twice as long to eat a half-meal as it did the rest of us to eat regular-sized portions.  But she said she was never hungry; she realized when she was getting full, because she ate so slowly, and that's when she stopped eating.

      She lost 33 pounds in about two months.  Now all of us ladies who pal around together are eating half-portions very slowly, and all of us are dropping pounds.  We're not watching what we eat or changing what we eat, just eating very slowly and stopping when we're full.

      It's amazing how none of us feel hungry - and none of us refers to what we're doing as a "diet."

      does cause obesity.  Our car culture is a health hazard.  Our communities are not communal anymore.
