    if he had been appointed instead of Gillibrand. I'm not sure, otherwise, that it's a question of being too liberal, but he isn't young and I don't think he could win a contested statewide primary.

      I'd be pretty sure that he would win a re-election.  I myself didn't quite know what to think of him at first.  
      But I learned that je's very intelligent, and gets increasingly likable as you get to know him.  But... as you say, in a contested primary, a candidate such as him has difficulty.  Sort of like a Dennis Kucinich situation.
