from another diary because of a link.  I thought the stimulus funds were meant to head off these kinds of mass "layoffs".  Kudos for your hard work, I appreciate it.

but it's not happening. it's daily marches with major parts of San Juan absolutely shut down. everything's leading up to the general strike on the 15th. police are EVERYWHERE, especially after the Gov getting the egg thrown at him and the growing number of protestors in the streets.

      •  So they received the funds (1+ / 0-)

and then what did they do?  Is the Governor asking for more money?  I thought this process was transparent.

the funds have not been disbursed, though reporters are all over it trying to get to the truth. one thing great about the press here is they don't believe a word any politician says until proven otherwise - the nickname of our legislators is...

he's asking for money above and beyond the stimulus funds in order to "bail out" our banking system. he's also seeking funds for medicaid. all the while he's hell bent on the privitazation of everything. his mantra is the govt. is broke, there will be no tax raises, the private sector will take care of everything, he has confidence in the "resilience" of the pr people...

well the people have given him the finger (and an egg), the republican spectacle in the states (I guess we're expected to ignore what's going on - as if) has exposed the gov and his supporters as the charlatans they are. his own party has turned on him, and the protests are growing day by day.

now if only the teabaggers can have such an opening of the eyes experience, then without doubt they will turn on the repubs. the states have nothing on the fundies here, and here - they've turned.

          •  Privitazation huh? (1+ / 0-)

That makes my skin crawl, and the phrase about the resilience of the people is out of an old old playbook, we've heard that one before, it means too bad you're you and I'm so lucky to be me.

I hate sharing this, but it's an important part of what has happened here over the past few weeks. Jaime González, appointed by the gov. as the executive director of the government project Portal del Fututo. sounds nice, huh? the government plan was to develop the land of the old Roosevelt Roads Naval Base. Turns out, what was planned was the construction of the luxury mega-resort, Riviera del Caribe. The area in question is land where most of the residents live in socially and economically disadvantaged communities. Jaime González made the following statements to these very same residents last month - and kicked off a shit storm that hasn't stopped.

"We are going to have some stores, some will sell products you can’t buy. Well, such is life. Not everyone is so fortunate. But there is no exclusion here...And the person who does not have 50 cents to buy an Icee, at least you can enjoy and go out for a stroll in those walks by the sea and see the cruises come, and see the passengers, the passengers with money, get off the cruises, and see them go in the stores and see them buy expensive things, and whoever has an inferiority complex because of this, well, I feel sorry for you...such is life. Not everyone is so fortunate..."

the gov couldn't survive the shitstorm and fired González, but not before defending him and refusing to fire him immediately. ay bendito

it seems that nothing changes with these people.  I guess it doesn't take a crystal ball to understand what is going on.  We should never be surprised when $$$ is concerned.  Please consider an ongoing series of posts explaining the situation in PR, again my thanks to you and my apologies too for not responding to your post sooner.
