    That calculus makes sense. It also makes sense that Scozzafava's leading, since "upstate" NY has grown a lot more like downstate (NYC & LI) over the past generation or two (like LI became more like NYC in the previous ones) - the Lower Hudson Valley looks a lot more now like LI did in the 1970s.

    So why is Scozzafava still a Republican?

    Her positions agree more with Democratic ones, both the party line and Democratic voters. The Republican brand can't be helping much, even in those largely rural counties. The NY-23 Democrats couldn't even get a Democrat to run.

    Why not line up form with content, and get Scozzafava to run, and sit, as a Democrat? I bet the only difference is continuity of fundraising, and the DNC probably has a lot more to offer these days than the RNC does. If she wins, but switches later (either midterm, or before some other election), she'll look much worse than if she switches now, when everyone will understand fleeing the dying/rabid Republican Party.
