Progressives cannot achieve worthwhile goals by voting blindly for the Democratic 'brand' while pretending that electing one more conservative Democrat is not encouraging corporate sell outs to push the party further to the right.

Progressives should learn from the right wing of the Republican party, who have clearly seized control by standing firm against those to their left. But that's not to say that progressives should go insane like the Republican wing nuts and oppose anything and everything to their right.

Progressives should be pragmatic, as in this case, and vote against people like Lincoln and Cooper and Baucus when there is a reasonable alternative. If they do not, they may as well go home. Right wing Democrats will never take them seriously unless they show they have teeth.

There are some cases where the most that can be done is to withhold support for conservative Democrats by not contributing time or money to their campaigns, yet still pulling the lever for them on election day. In other cases, it may be best to also deny them or their opponent a vote. But in this case, it appears to be in the best interests of promoting progressive goals to vote for the Republican.
