Puglette's diary at Pam's House Blend (posted as Louise) has details. The Maine Ethics Commission now, in addition to the California Fair Political Practices Commission, is investigating NOM for money laundering and violation of campaign funding laws. We owe Fred Karger a big whopping thank you (and maybe some donations to help cover his legal expenses).

That's now two investigations into NOM. Who knows what Pandora's box will be opened, and how much mormon money will be exposed? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the mormon church has been funding gay-bashing-by-ballot since Hawaii in the 90s. The trick is catching them and exposing them for doing it, and maybe, just maybe, getting them prosecuted and fined for illegal practices.

    •  Good !!! (0+ / 0-)

... I don't care if the LDS want to give political donations but this has been a horrific abuse of the campaign finance laws, which have limits as to how much an individual can give to one candidate during a certain time frame. Rules. Remember rules? Those pesky little things we're all supposed to follow?

Plus, it's terrible that churches are directly funding candidates by telling members to contribute.  Telling them right in the churches, such as that Catholic Bishop is doing up in Maine this year.  What an abuse of religious power.   The lying about it also was not nice, I had many online discussions about this in 2008, with people whom were trying to defend it by insisting it didn't happen, where they were insisting that the Mormons were not doing this, even as I showed them they were doing it- I'd pull up the donation records.  Gee, every family in that ward on that date gave the same amount.... what a coincidence, you'd think it was coordinated.

Tax exempt status-  if you act like a business instead of a charity, you should get taxed. They had all sorts of "charities" that were getting money from politician's accounts, to print flyers up telling people which candidates to vote for.

Well, so far until Scalia at the Supreme Court declares souless corporations are the same as human beings, we will have donation limits, but we'll deal with that as it happens.
