    That's one of those trivia questions that most don't know, but yes, Recife has a very interesting history.  It was originally the city of Mauritstad,  built by the Dutch who reclaimed the current city center from the swamps, and who allowed religious freedom.  The first synagogue in the New World was built here in the 1600s.  Of course, when the Portuguese re-invaded, the Jews were expelled, and as you said, many ended up migrating to New Amsterdam.
