  •  One other point (3+ / 0-)

by lowering the retirement age -- you would get a lot of people off unemployment rolls --

and open up a lot of jobs for younger workers --

which would be a win-win for corporations and workers alike (workers that had saved enough for retirement that is)

    •  Problem is..... (5+ / 0-)

....no retirement plan outside of the military is set up to mature at 40.  Or even 50.  People on regular retirement plans, (401k, the few pensions that still exist, etc) would get badly screwed.  Social Security wouldn't make up for the loss of twenty years of interest on their IRA's.

      •  Who said anything about a retirement plan? (4+ / 0-)

There is no plan (that is, money) for us.

They just want us off the job rolls.

        We are on our own.

Yes, they are lowering the retirement age by forcing anyone over 50 out of the workplace and not allowing them any compensation or medical care until they are 65 to 67. That's 15 to 17 long, lonely years.

Lots of sick older people are dying off between 50 and 65.

        Planned obsolesence for human beings.

And that's not a conspiracy theory. I'm living it.

If you can call this living.

and not thinking so much about how to pay for it, more along the lines of its happening whether we like it or not, everywhere, so why not try to adapt to it somehow. Dont forget, we will have company soon. Lets not give them a great excuse to think the world is better off without us.

raising the retirement age to 70,75 for a long time now, and they will do it one of these days. this diary has it backwards, as usual.

      •  But they do that for economic reasons. (2+ / 0-)

The retirement age keeps going up because SS is always nearly bankrupt.  They raise the age in order to find some money and put off the collapse.  That doesn't mean people are retiring at 70.  They keep working p/t jobs or volunteer work.

Are those people really mean and sadistic, or simply extremely stupid.

Because NO WAY would they be able to extend people's work years like that. Many older people are struggling in workplaces now in their 50s and 60s. I'm not that young and I can tell you, I have to really work hard to keep from falling backwards, substantially.

I can see how once the brain starts shrinking (around 35) it becomes very hard form scientists or anybody who does non-machine doable work to keep producing the highest quality work.

The very best scientists and mathematicians, for example, have often done their best work by age 30. (Look at Einstein or especially Galois!)

There's arguably in some ways a very short window there for real world class work. Anything else wont cut it in another 20 years, so why not retire people and let others take over? Pay people to teach or mentor others. We need to get education to the young in a big way, we are really dropping the ball. They can't loaf around, or its all over. Other countries have cram schools, kids study day and night to get into college. And then they pay for it. Why not here?

And then we need tools to help people identify what they might be best in. And we need to figure out how to get the resources to them to do it. We forget, its a race we are in here.

The rest of the world won't wait for us!

      •  there is a difference between what different (0+ / 0-)

... branches of the "government" think. He's putting forth an economic theory.  I am sure there are some wonks somewhere in government who recognize and would prefer this to happen, if if they would not admit it, and as some other people are saying below, from a practical standpoint,

        it is happening already.

You have had huge job losses, unemployment, and it has hit the 45 to 55 age group disportionately the hardest, especially in the manufacturing/ working class/ blue collar sector. They are being let go for younger workers who are cheaper to employ or just being let go because of layoffs under the guise of not being as efficient.

But that doesn't mean the wonks would have the power to implement it as official policy.

            •  I think that its pretty obvious that they ARE (0+ / 0-)

doing this.. If they weren't, we'd be seeing riots by the 20 and 30 year olds who couldn't get jobs.

We would have to do what Mao did and send them all to some big flat place to dig ditches and then fill them in or some other worthwhile activity.

Or we would have to lower the retirement age for real, and give people real healthcare for free.

I think that from their perspective, ruining the lives of those older people who might have invested heavily in their jobs and working hard for decades but who don't have a lot of money in the bank to pay endlessly for their "health reform" etc, and dont have a lot of money is probably the least odious alternative.

Stalin and Hitler had their purges, even of the true believers, we have this. Either way, politicians can give out their perks, young people don't have idle hands, and business is more profitable because wages are kept down by terror. (not terrorism, Terror, its immediate ancestor)

      •  ?? (0+ / 0-)

        I haven't seen anything about 75.

The '60s were simply an attempt to get the 21st Century started early....Well, what are we waiting for? There's no deadline on a dream!
