Beethoven studied counterpoint with him.  Mozart was the greater genius, but there's no historical evidence Salieri ever thought of himself as Mozart's inferior, but it's pretty clear Jay resents Dave's greater talent, or should I just say Jay resents Dave's talent full stop.  (Salieri and Mozart at various times conspired against each other, collaborated with each other, and promoted each other's compositions.)

Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart's librettist on Le Nozze di Figaro, Cosi Fan Tutte, and Don Giovanni (and some operas with Salieri that nobody performs anymore) was a better comedian than Leno or Letterman.  (His life story is amazing -- born in the Jewish ghetto in Venice, he was forcibly converted to Catholicism, became a priest, had to leave Italy after impregnating the daughter of a local baron, worked as a language instructor in Vienna before writing libretti for the likes of Mozart, got kicked out of Austria for political dissidence, went to London for a while, emigrated to the New world, ran a grocery store in Philadelphia, until he moved to New York where he became the first professor of Italian languages at Columbia University and produced operas)
