  •  Trailer (7+ / 0-)

Let's see if this one works for you.....

With 'Predator,' I'm not sure how close Robert Rodriguez is going to stick to the "canon" of the original 'Predator' films. For one thing, instead of the Predators coming here to hunt, this movie will have them kidnapping humans to take back to a "game preserve" on their Homeworld.

    •  Thanks - I've actually seen that trailer (maybe (2+ / 0-)

from one of your prior references, actually?) - and it still looks like more of the Gilliam-style odd, goodness that I adore.

I recently went back through the entire run of Marvel's long-defunct EPIC Illustrated mature-audience, quarterly magazine.  Your summary of the basic plot in this new "Predator" film made me instantly think of Chris Claremont and John Bolton's "Marada the She-Wolf" story in issue #12, called "Royal Hunt".  The notion being that Marada and her adopted daughter (or "cub") were captured and given the chance for freedom . . . if they could survive being fairly hunted by the local tribe's Queen.  Claremont writes females a bit stereotypically at times, but this story was nonetheless a well-done tale.

Of course, there's all sorts of parallels with other comic book, short story and novels I've read, "The Naked Prey" film, etc.

But, I thought that all of those versions of the "hunt down people" story had either classy characters or strong characterization - your desire to see the prey survive was strong enough to give the pieces a reason to finish.

Which means that this may suck, because it's trying to be a Predator film, which had 2D characters fitting into specific molds - without the element of surprise (i.e., realizing that they may be hunted for sport over the course of the film) and slow reveals of the hunting party - in a manner that otherwise seems to require caring about their well-being in order to find the purpose of this film acceptable, IMHO.  Unless folks just go to see guts, gore and big effects with aliens, of course.
