  •  The Dutch aren't stiff (14+ / 0-)

I married one ;-) They're very warm, very practical, and very honest. If you can't take honesty, you won't like the Dutch.

Also, it isn't just cultural tensions that are a problem. You pretty much have to be married to a Dutch person to be able to immigrate there. You can't just show up and work, because you need a permit to earn money, and even then, it's not guaranteed that you'll get a job. Plus, you're required by law to take classes to "integrate", meaning learn Dutch.

So it's an expensive pain in the butt to immigrate, basically. Unless you're a multi-millionaire or married to a citizen, you really need to think carefully before you move there.

    •  Yes, I've known some very warm Dutch (5+ / 0-)

people. Wrong of me to overgeneralize that way.

Its something about the cultural presentation that is off-putting to me. It feels stark. Of course, I've only been there once and I've only known a few Dutch people. So, who am I to say. Its a gut reaction. perhaps I would love it. Who knows?

But I guess I'd better find a Dutch husband if I want to go there!

      •  And you'd better become fabulously rich (4+ / 0-)

We were only moderately well-off when I moved over there, and it cost a fortune.

Plus, I don't know if you'd be able to use your medical excuse to get out of classes. They're really, really strict about immigrants following the rules and taking those classes.

Just thought I'd be upfront about the real problems you'd be sure to encounter. It's not easy to immigrate overseas. It's very difficult, in fact. If you have a medical problem, it might not be the best option.

(Also, if you plan to buy property, a place in Amsterdam will run you at least 400K euros. That's about $1.20/euro, at the very best exchange rate.)

        Have you thought of Canada?
