  •  Lyme disease is an awful (4+ / 0-)

illness to have.  I recently just had a tiny tiny concern I might have been exposed and my doctor put me on antibiotics immediately.  I'm insured, I have a good doctor, and I have the resources to pay for medication even if I weren't insured.  But lots of people would not have wanted to spend their scarce resources on a doctor visit and medication when they basically felt okay.
I'm a big believer in not overusing antibiotics, but this isn't an illness you want to take any chances with -- I know of 2 siblings who contracted lyme disease as children.  One has some relatively minor health problems.  The other will never be quite right -- he suffers from organic brain disease from the lyme disease.  They were victims of how little was known about it at the time they were exposed.
Now more is known.  We don't have a vaccine so the only preventive measure is to immediately go on antibiotics if you have any reason to think you might have the disease.  The ticks are so small (the size of this . ) they can easily be missed.  The rash that can identify the disease is only present in 70-80% of cases.  Our area has very high rates of lyme disease, and deer are omnipresent, in our streets, yards, everywhere.  So just walking to your car puts you at risk.
When you think of all that, and then think of people who have to watch every dime in order to pay their rent and buy food, the idea that they either wouldn't have insurance, or would have insurance that makes it difficult for them to get care is infuriating.

If, in our efforts to win, we become as dishonest as our opponents on the right, we don't deserve to triumph.
