    But isn't the moon supposed to have originated from the earth?  In which case it would not be a surprise for the two bodies to have similar elements.

      The question of where Earth's water came from is still undecided. Many believe that it was the result of comet bombardment--and that would extend to the moon. Others believe it was the result of geothermal reactions. The moon had none. So there's a question there.

      And then there's the question of how organic molecules originate. If they came from space (i.e. in comet water) that's a whole different path.
