  •  Obama's Peace prize may be (27+ / 0-)

the best European gift to America since the French sent us the Statue of Liberty.

Cornel West observes that getting a Nobel Peace Prize makes it awfully hard to be a war president. That's precisely why the Committee gave the prize to Obama so early in his first term: to help keep him on the straight and narrow, to remind him that the world expects him to use diplomacy first, miliary force last in addressing security problems. There aren't many ways Europe can positively affect US foreign policy, but this is one of them, and Americans should thank the Nobel Committee for their confidence in us and the President we elected.

The prize also restores America's credibility in time for what will undoubtedly be very difficult negotiations in Oslo  over capping carbon emissions, and difficult negotiations with Iran over accepting intl. controls over their nuclear program.

And I think it's also nonsense to bleat about Obama not having done anything yet to earn a Peace prize. The US is finally starting to leave Iraq (which wouldn't be happening if McCain had been elected); the unnecessary conflict with Russia over US ABM installations in Poland and the Czech Republic has been very adroitly ended by Obama, with no loss of US face; and today, after nearly a century of hostility, Armenia and Turkey finally signed a treaty reestablishing normal diplomatic relations and reopening their borders. That treaty was brokered by the Obama administration; no previous US administration had given a shit about the issue.

    •  just an FYI, that treaty needs to be ratified by (2+ / 0-)

Here is what I posted on Friday's Morning Feature diary immediately after I had heard President Obama won the Nobel Peace prize.  It is much in the same vein as your comment above:

One last thing, I had "opted in" to logging on before I got to painting today.  LOL  And Lo and Behold, what do I see?  Our President Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize! I believe awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to President Obama was a very pro-active choice by the Committee.  IMHO, it was a gift to the American people to award the Peace Prize to President Obama.
