  •  probably not in your lifetime.... (3+ / 0-)

...but maybe in the lifetime of kids being born now.

OTOH there may be other unexpected hazards that come up, for example general increases in the levels of infectious agents (bacteria, viruses), and the emergence of resistant strains, and who-knows-what-else.

So you ought to monitor those developments and be prepared to take various steps to protect yourself as needed, for example by wearing a full-body suit, not going in when you have cuts or bruises, washing thoroughly after coming out of the ocean water, etc.  Those steps may not be needed now, but giving thought to them will make it easier to do them if/when the time comes.

    •  I already do some of that (3+ / 0-)

I always try to get a good shower soon after getting out of the water, I always wear ear plugs that prevent the water from entering my ear canals. The wetsuit is entirely dependent on temperature. I do stay out of the water with open cuts.

I've gotten sick from surfing exactly once in almost 10 years of nearly daily surfing, and I usually surf within the City of Los Angeles (pop. 4,000,000) and nearly always within the County of Los Angeles (pop. 10,000,000) so I consider it a minor miracle and tribute to the fine work of groups like the Surfrider Foundation and Heal the Bay that I can still safely do so (the one time I got sick was actually up north in Santa Cruz). In fact, it's the rare session where I don't get to see a couple of dolphins swimming close by.
