money and about six months getting all my chemical levels just right, waiting for the algae to grow (which i was told was essential for proper oxygen levels to keep the fish healthy) and then Summer came. The algae went berserk - I thought "Great, more oxygen!"

You see, in winter months or just a typical indoor environment, tanks usually need heaters to get up to a healthy temperature; above what we normally live in; around 78 degrees. A little warmer is OK, but not much.

And one summer in my last semester of college, I could not afford to keep the air conditioner on in Raleigh North Carolina.

I could use fans and open windows to get through just a few months, I could put up with temps in the 90's.

But the reef tank was now 82...83....84....

and my $110 "Lion Fish" - a fascinating, striped tropical fish with four inch-long poisonous spines on his back -- was a salt-water fish who would see me enter the room and go towards the refrigerator; the Lion Fish would go to the water survace and wait eagerly with his mouth tilted up at the corner of the tank so i could feed him frozen shrimp -

he started getting lesions all over him.

Turns out the warmer water also invted bacteria and viruses to breed - all that organic matter was a petri dish at the wrong temperature -

    and soon he was dead.

So yeah. I got the point that maintaining proper conditions are important about two decades ago, about the time when James Hansen's first reports were published.

And that's why I no longer talk to many of my neighbors and friends, who say,

    "It's just solar activity" or

"it's just that the earth's orbit is slightly closer" or

    - "Whatever it is, it can't be man made" or

"well God must know what He's doing"...

The species with the big brains who figure this out, and member of the species with narrow minds and no concience won't listen to what we've learned.

Human kind will destroy itself, because those who were smart enough to understand what was happening will be overruled by the din of the dense and ignorant (and willfully stupid) ones who can't bring themselves to accept any blame.

And so it goes, said Kurt Vonnegut.

But maybe not for much longer.

George Orwell is banging on the lid of his coffin and screaming, "1984 was a cautionary tale, you dolts, not a motivational speech!"
