    probably not a huge impact in the water column oxygen levels.  But likely that oxygen will be low inside the mucus.

    The bigger problem would be for the benthic (sea floor) community (bacteria and worms in the sediment, plus any non-motile bottom dwellers (such as surface attached clams, etc).  

    Since these mucus aggregates apparently sink eventually... they probably suffocate any area they settle down onto.  And to give proper credit...The paper's authors do mention this as one of the possible negative impacts.
