    •  "Everyone In Nacogdoches (11+ / 0-)

Knew Tom Ames would come to some bad end
      'Cause the sheriff caught him
Stealin' chickens and such by the time that he was ten"

I'm an unapologetic Steve Earle fan. Couldn't resist.

      I also like the line,

"I ain't asking for a miracle Lord, just a little bit of luck will do."

"If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers." - Thomas Pynchon, "Gravity's Rainbow"

      •  the full name 'Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe de (10+ / 0-)

los Nacogdoches.' An interesting story is the Marx Bros. playing the 'opera House' there in 1912 and when they were interrupted by shouts of a 'runaway mule' the audience left and when they returned Groucho started insulting them.."Nacogdoches is full of roaches", and "The jackass is the flower of Tex-ASS". The audience laughed.

Nac has also flown under 9 Flags and one was The Republic of Freedonia...sound familiar ? Rufus t. Firefly was the 'Leader' in 'Duck Soup'. Trivia yeah, but cool, and to this day there are are a lot of good musicians around there.

On the Legal front I will add that If I had to deal with a policeman in either Austin or Nac, I'll pick Austin, and I do have experience with both.

Went to school in Nac.  Even though it's a college town, it ain't liberal by any stretch of the imagination.  Many references while I was there to the corruption of the police force and justice system in Nac, and it is permeated with small-town Texas mentality.  I used to get told at least once a week by locals that I was going to hell...for my bumper sticker that said "no one is free while others are oppressed."
I loved my literature classes, though!  :-)  Thank you Dr. S.

The proven execution of an innocent person should mean the end of the death penalty in the United States.

quite a few very Progressive people that also seem to have lots of friends, but they dont seem to be on the general Publics' radar. However it looks like a big push for citizen involvement in what happens in  the City ,IS happening, and it looks like the hubris of the 'powers that be' has awakened a lot of people to activism.

The city commission "with little or no community input beforehand" gave the permit for  federal Prison within city limits. This is part of 11 amendments to add to the State Constitution, but this is a good example of an issue that brings people that can ( at the very best) be described as 'apolitical', and Nac ain't exactly where you would expect to see a march organized on anything.  I think this issue has awakened a lot of people, pulled them into being involved in voting, that otherwise wouldn't have voted at all on a referendum amending the State Constitution. Sad but true.
