    When I saw this piece, I thought some of the same things (why the side-profile), why the unusually stylized and flat background (seems more medieval).  It also perplexed me how little spark there was in the character of the figure.  No one but Da Vinci can pull out the intelligence and emotion out of a figure like he can.  Still, the sfmato technicque and anatomy is excellent.  I can see the skull through the form.  Masterful.  The design is so tame, however.  Only in anatomical studies do I see such boringly descriptive composition of the figure.  Still, very exciting piece.  They say it could be worth 150 million dollars.  It sounds like a lot, but it is rare that a da Vinci painting goes for sale.  Most belong in Museums, and will never be for market...and that makes this less-developed painting exciting as ever when it hits the market!  Thank you for your great blog entry!
