    $20,000 (when la principessa was thought to be the work of a German painter) to $1.6 million now.  

    That's some seriously good return on an investment.

    I bet the person who sold it last is kicking herself!

      painting for only a mere $1.6 million USD, there would be a millionaire stampede.  That painting and its appraisal will be over $150 million because there are far more of Leonardo's drawings than painting.

          The price of a work of art is not determined  by how beautiful or good it is, but by supply and demand.

          Appraisers research what comparable items are selling for.

          Unique works like this have astronomical prices because of rarity and the high esteem of collectors and museums.
