  •  Yes! (15+ / 0-)

Huffington Post has become a tabloid and it's pretty obvious that it started with it's founder.  The "sensationalized" titles, the "rumors make fact" reporting.  Ugh!  Some of our diarists here are guilty of the same but nothing on the level of H.P.

I think that is what is wrong with news these days, they compete too much with each other and shpae there news to what works for ratings!

    •  The whole point was to create a liberal Drudge (2+ / 0-)

While I don't agree with her on this, she's been pretty much on target with most things. Also, I give her points for looking at things in an unconventional manner.

I'm also one who still believes that Afghanistan deserves the honest, full throated, fully focused response that 9/11 beg for, but never got. It is likely too late, and I'm not saying Obama's Afghan policy might not work out etc...

In my mind, they are Japan in WWII. We were attacked from Afghanistan. The Iraq war was the equivalent of Roosevelt attacking Peru after Japan bombed us. I don't think Obama's focus on Afghanistan is uncalled for here, as Ariana obviously does. To not give it focus would be the aquiavlent of letting Japan off the hook in World War II, after Roosevelt spent 8 years attacking Peru for Japan having bombed us. You'd still have to deal with Japan. Likewise we still have to deal with Afghanistan.

On the other hand, it may be too late to do anything constructive. But it's not wrong to try with more competent hands at the wheel.

I don't think you should abandon her site over this.

She set out to create an Drudge on the left as an antidote and counter-stroke to Drudge.  Air America attempted to do the same thing on the Radio.  I think she's been largely successful. She also has some good commetary, like Bill Maher and Robert Kuttner over there quite a bit.

I don't blame anyone for being upset with this because it is off the reservation a bit, if you will. But as far as I can tell, this is the first time she has really been off the reservation on an issue of substance.

More irritating is she's a celebrity gad fly. She drops more names than my Aunt Karen, and her value scheme is wholey transparent - she doesn't think anyone is worthy of associating with unless they are a celebrity.  She's a bit of a celebrity whore or celebrity monger. She's a bit full of her self. But that conceit, up to now, hasn't impaired her judgement.

My guess is, in her narcisstic myopia, she read the tea leaves,  and wanted to get out in front of an antiwar movement before it got started. My guess she's still there and will be there for a while, until it looks utterly foolish and other celebrities start distancing themselves away from her. She'll snap back in line once that happens.

She can't stand not kibitzing with celebs.  She's like the Martha Stewart of politics.
