    but I don't see a problem with a).  At the time of his campaign, the war was seen as being prosecuted by an extremely malevolent, vicious administration.  I think that the hope, then, was that a change in DC would yield better prospects in Afghanistan.  Additionally, I think that people were more enamored of the juxtaposition of Iraq as a wholly illegitimate war which POTUS' Afghanistan position carried, than a real attachment to the prospect of endless war in Afghanistan.

    I think that you hit the nail on the head in that for all of these hawks who permeate DC, the nature of war is poorly understood.

    We'll see what happens, but there's no good option here.  I do doubt, however, that POTUS would take a huge political hit for failing to keep the particular campaign promise of escalating the Afghanistan war beyond the level at which the Obama administration has already escalated it.  People admire his common sense; that common sense as applied to this war would not result in loss of political capital IMO.
