Although many of them saw their choices as being limited to the Army or flipping burgers for the rest of their lives.

It depends on your attitude toward the troops and our obligations to those who serve in the military:

    - If you think of the troops as babykillers, then they are getting what they deserve.

    - If you are a compassionate pacifist, you really wish they wouldn't have joined in the first place, because you really wish we didn't have a military. But you recognize that they did join and they did serve and we owe them some consideration for their service. What kinds of consideration is open to debate.

    - If you are an uncompassionate pacifist, you really wish they wouldn't have joined in the first place, because you really wish we didn't have a military. So it's their problem. The main point is that we need to get the word out so that maybe fewer people will join the military.

    - If you think the troops are putting their lives on the line to keep you, your loved ones, and your country safe, then whether they volunteered or not is irrelevant, and why they volunteered is irrelevant. Then we owe them big time.
