    will get this, you're correct, even a small mortality rate translates into one really large pool of dead people.

    This is not unusual.  The 1918 flu, if I remember right, killed "only" 2% of the people who got it, if you use 104M as a good guess for the population of the US in 1918, and assume as the Wikipedia article does that about 28% of the population got the virus, and that it killed around 600K people.

    Best guess is that this virus is a lot less virulent, but it's not unreasonable to assume that something like 30% of the population -- or more -- will get sick.
