    They are both Canis familiaris.
And there is no reason to believe that the species is any more flexible than others; it's just that we have manipulated it more than we have most species.

      As we have with Cannabis.

Contrast the plant shown in the WWII movie "Hemp for Victory" with some of the specialized stuff being grown in hydroponics in British Columbia or the Netherlands.

It is seriously like putting a great dane next to a toy poodle.

It is curious to see the periodical disuse and perishing of means and machinery, which were introduced with loud laudation a few years or centuries before. -RWE

      •  Ah, but it's a different animal, (0+ / 0-)

or plant at the end of the process than you had at the beginning, even though we'd all agree that toy poodles and Great Danes are Canis familiaris and that hemp and BC bud are both members of the same species. A species is an intellectual construct; what evolves over time is a gene pool, fragments of which are carried briefly by individuals and their gametes. Richard Dawkins in The Greatest Show on Earth has a nice description of a hair-pin tour of evolution; you can imagine, say, a leopard, and member of a recognizable genus and species, whose parents were also of the same species, and their parents, back in time, through individuals who (when we carry it back far enough) were not in the species that leopards are today, but who were still members of the same species as were their parents and progeny; you get to an ancestral mammal, and can do a u-turn down the lane where rabbits live today.

          •  Only in the sense that (0+ / 0-)

the Chihuahua yapping in a car window, and a Rhodesian Ridgeback running lions are the same animal: they share a recent common ancestor and are (very likely, anyway) interfertile, with fertile offspring, and are thus, in our intellectual construct, members of the same species.
