  •  Harper's is always out to provoke. (0+ / 0-)

And I am sick of the reduce population canard. The US has reduced it's population growth, but we each use the resources that HOW MANY Indians? 10? 20? How many Africans?

It's not how many of us primarily, it's about lifestyle of the very weathiest of us....(that includes most Americans)

    •  Overpopulation IS a problem (0+ / 0-)

Actually, I think Harper's is right. Global populations will decline by the end of the century, either gradually or abruptly. We'd be much better off if the reduction is controlled and gradual.

The core of the problem is that productivity of key food crops (corn, soybeans) could drop 80% given sufficient warming. Sure, Americans are great consumers of energy and goods, but we certainly can't reduce our food consumption by 80%. And when people start getting worried about the food supply, they start to pick up guns.

I'm predicting major resource wars before the end of the century, spawning secondary effects of famine and plague, ending in a world population drop to 3-4 billion.

      •  If Americans ate lower on the food chain, (0+ / 0-)

there would be plenty of food. People food is now going to feed cattle for American and European consumption. Each step in the food chain reduces food energy.

So no. The only population we should be reducing is in the first world, because we consume so much. The rest of the world should be given info and access to family planning, but this problem rests firmly on OUR shoulders.

TO say otherwise is a diversion.

OTOH, resource wars are probably inevitable. Just about every country has access to the information about who has the resources in this world. So we'd better watch out.
