    As another commenter points out, wingnut conspiracy theories weren't lacking in the Clinton era, and going back to the Gt Society and New Deal you can find conservatives throwing around the "socialism" charge.  

    That said, my own take is that some of the intensity and extremity of the opposition to Obama is driven by a kind of sublimated racism, which accounts for how divorced from reality they've become.  When MLK got labeled a "communist," that was false too, but at least in the midst of the cold war, concerns about communism had some kind of toe hold in the world of reality.  But today, concerns about fascism and socialism aren't just false when applied to Obama--they associate him with a threat that doesn't even exist.
