  •  NATO (0+ / 0-)

there is a fight going on about what NATO is for in the future and Fogh-Rammussen, is on the side of the US view, he would never have been allowed to get the job unless he was.

NATO was originally agreed as an Alliance to:

    1. Keep the Soviets Out
    1. Keep the Germans Down
    1. Keep the Americans In

this is post 1945 and France has fought Germany 3 times between 1870 and 1940 and didn't want to do it again, Stalin is an obvious threat, and there is certainly a view in the US that everyone should just go home as they did in 1919 and the Europeans are worried that they could not stand up to Stalin without the US.

The worry of the Americans is being dragged in to Colonial wars all over the world, Britain and France and to a smaller extent Belgium, Netherlands and Portugal, (all NATO members) still had Empires covering most of Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

So the deal was the Alliance would defend any of the nations territory in North America, the Atlantic North of the Tropic of Cancer, the Americans were not going to fight to help the Brits keep India, or the Dutch Indonesia or the French Vietnam or Algeria, (something went wrong with one of them).

The Europeans without empires developed Armed Forces built around conscript armies to defend home soil against the Soviet Hordes, the Europeans with Empires gradually withdrew and would down the ability to project force overseas. We do not need specialist logistics if we are fighting the invader at home, we do not need lots of Helicopters if we are fighting in Western Europe with good Road and Rail.

Problem is since 1991 and the end of the Soviet Union the reason for NATO has been to protect against a possible resurgent Russia which is unlikely at present, or to reverse the original bargain and get Europeans to go help fight Americas colonial wars around the world, and the Europeans are not impressed with that idea so to avoid having a total break with the US they equip just enough of their forces to be able to operate far from home to deploy something while at the same time not committing to deploy much.

And in the first sentence I have a new conspiracy.  Fogh Rassmussen got his job because he supports the U.S. view....but what is that view?  Did Fogh Rassmussen sleep with Obama for his job, or did he sleep with McChrystal, or did he sleep with the CEO of Boeing?  Perhaps he slept with all three?

      •  And WHO slept with Medea Benjamin? (0+ / 0-)

Caution......this link has photos of dead children that it is alleged one of our "hitting the Taliban with a small footprint" airstrikes brought about.  I'm reluctant to make an accusation that these children absolutely died because of this, but if anyone here thinks for one minute that this isn't what you will get with the "BIDEN PLAN" you guys are still dealing in ponies.  What is so funny is that whoever wrote this writeup in this link doesn't understand that COIN doesn't like collateral damage like this.  If you want to treat the people of Afghanistan like people then you will have to put more troops in there.  And Medea Benjamin didn't sleep with Obama, she met with the Code Pink women of Afghanistan and came away with a different policy that Code Pink now endorses because of the people she met in person.  She is probably the most rabid antiwar voice out there too, but who will stand up to tyrants?  Apparently she will make an effort.

      •  US View. (0+ / 0-)

US Military Diplomatic Establishment view from Cheney to Biden and back is NATO should become a support for "Western" intervention wherever the US decides intervention is needed.

Cheney would intervene in more places and Biden and Obama less but once the decision is made they want NATO to salute and say yes sir.

The European view is NATO is designed to protect Europe directly and we have no interest in intervention East of Suez and do not want to make it a formal NATO function though individual countries will occasionally agree to support individual initiatives. Afghanistan as a NATO mission is seen as an aberration in Europe, it is seen as the beginning of a long serious of operation by the Pentagon.

As far as I know he did not have to sleep with anyone unless you know more!!!

        •  Wow, and I totally missed the memo (0+ / 0-)

that retasked the Vice President of the United States to be the Commander in Chief or to share that power.  Got any evidence to support YOUR conspiracy theory?  Afghanistan is not NATOs only problem either, there are a couple looming on the horizon too. If you want to leave the alliance though, please lobby to do so.  I won't be.  And I won't be tossing around ignorant unproven bullshit either.
