While we will soon be a majority minority country, whites will still have a large plurality, and no one ethnic group will have the voting power to elect a minority unless they get support from other minorities. If white liberals, hispanics, and Asian Americans all start blaming each other for the election of Sarah Palin then there's a problem.

I oppose racism in all forms, and dealt with some utter crap in Central Pennsylvania to get Barack Obama elected. But I'm also a realist, and I understand that despite that fact there are subvert racial components to issues even in people who are not racist.

And my point is that yes, we have to get passed the race issue. But for that to happen, as Tom admits in his diary, there has to be a successful minority Presidency. (If you look at states and cities that elected African American Mayors and Senators, there are a lot of one-termers followed by years and years of no minority Mayor or Senator). And successful policy means actually working to keep your campaign promises--not needlessly watering them down to please the special interests, which is what the President has been doing this weekend.

You see the opposite happening as well.  I went to school in Central PA.  The ONLY place I have been called "Nigger" and spit at, and I lived in the South for years.  However, you still don't address the issue really in your response, IMO.  So I will be blunt.  Why can white guys fuck up and black guys can't?

I didn't take from Tom's diary that he was saying that Barack needed to be successful because no other black person would be elected.  I understood his diary to be saying that if Barack was not successful, then progressivism would not have a chance in turning the country around.
