  •  If I were a senator, I might consider a bit more. (1+ / 0-)

Namely, goading the Republicans into actually reading phone books by staging a reverse filibuster of sorts on the second or third day if no one speaks before then.

As we know, senators have the floor until they yield.  What I'd consider if I were a senator is this: making a brief speech, timed to conclude about when the death counter adds one more.  At that point I'd announce the number of Americans who have died since the filibuster began, and then offer to yield the floor directly to the first person to come to the podium and ask for it.  And then, if no one wanted to speak, I'd simply stand silently and, every 12 minutes, read the newly incremented number of deaths and repeat my offer to yield the floor to whoever has anything to say.  That could both draw attention to the counter and get a Republican to stand up and take the podium just to make it stop.  I think offering to yield to the first person wishing to debate should keep it from backfiring.
