doesn't mean he was opposed to the spirit of this legislation. You'd have to be a really cold fish not to understand the necessity of this law. And it seems the prior administration fits the definition of cold fish much more than the current one.

    •  As a result of that stance... (3+ / 0-)

...if things had gone differently, this could have been his first veto.  Now, think about that for a moment.

I'm not saying I believe President Obama would have been, even under those circumstances, opposed to the spirit of the legislation.  But it would have been nearly impossible for him to have recovered, at least among LGBTs, if, in addition to everything else, his first veto had been hate crimes.

      •  I don't think he wanted to veto it. (2+ / 0-)

but why it had to be attached to defense appropriations bill, and not as a single piece of legislation says more about the Congress.

I hear Snowe, Collins, Voinovich and Murkowski voted to end the filibuster, but that could have had more to do with troop appropriations than anything resembling human rights and violent discriminatory acts.

          Its any one guess

I guess they can't support the troops when it comes to GLGBT rights and protections.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House GOP Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-Ind.) are voting against the House/Senate fiscal year 2010 defense authorization bill — because it contains hate crimes provisions designed to protect gays and lesbians.

Boehner, speaking at his weekly press conference Thursday, said the inclusion of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act in the defense bill was "an abuse of power" by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that sought to punish offenders for what they thought — and not what they did.

He accused the speaker of pursuing her social agenda "on the backs" of the troops.
