    I never understood how such a rotten, corrupt war could enjoy popular support. Tepid popular support, perhaps, but a sizable, vocal minority of Americans supporting official justifications for the invasion of Iraq, and few others having much to say about it. We aren't talking Vietnam.

    It occurs to me that betrayal is hard. Realizing you've been callously manipulated, lied-to, and exploited by ones whose job it was to protect your interests--that's unbelievably painful.

    So, many must prefer NOT to acknowledge that painful reality, at all. To them, better to cling to comforting illusions, superstition, ignorance.

      displays of a citizenry inclined to participate in, excuse, and/or cheerlead violence.  From its inception.  We're trying to turn the page, but the popularity of Bush's wars is not that much of a departure from this country's history.
