You take a different view on matters when it affects people you know -- as people know gay and lesbians as neighbors and co-workers and friends, they're more likely to be okay with full equality regardless of their age; my parents-in-law are strongly in favor of marriage equality as well as other GLBT rights issues, and a big part of that is the fact that my mother-in-law's goddaughter is a lesbian. (My MIL especially thinks that marriage equality is important in terms of custody laws; her god-daughter had helped to raise her partner's children, but is not even able to see them since the partner had a religious conversion and took off.)

Someone who believes that being gay is no big deal when they're in their 20s isn't likely to turn into a homophobe in their 50s.

Civility is the way of telling someone to go fuck themselves in such a way that the someone agrees it probably is a good idea.

Some of those old bigots now have mixed-race grandkids and greatgrandkids - while it may not be what they expected 40 years ago - they choose to stay linked with their families rather than continuing to be actively racist.

Also, some of the oldest people will tell you they don't "have enough time left" to hate.
