Pushing for civil unions in the past ten years...not sitting and twiddling our thumbs while states banned it screaming "full marriage or bust!" There has to be stepping stones for change (such as how a public option could eventually lead to single payer, but it would be impossible to go from the status quo to single payer).

    •  who is "we"? (0+ / 0-)

The organized gay movement was pushing civil unions and domestic partnerships because they recognized the very thing you point out - stepping stone change is easier (& less risky) than huge leaps. Individual gay couples have wanted "marriage" and have fought for it, but they've typically been isolated.

But it is the Anti-gay Religious Right Wing that has pushed the anti-marriage initiative - because they see it as a great fundraising tool, they see it as an easy way to fire up their supporters, and they see it as a way to split people who are otherwise political allies (African Americans vs. gays, for instance).

Organized gay groups have joined the marriage fight because there really is no other choice.

Have you been twiddling your thumbs? Cuz I don't know anybody else who has. Unless it's the Democratic Party.

one of the cardinal rules of activism and of negotiation is that you have to ask for more than you expect to get. If you push for marriage, you have a chance of getting civil unions first. If instead you set your sights on civil unions, you wind up with reciprocal beneficiaries or weak domestic partnerships.
