I've always thought that it was never a question of whether gay couples would get equal marriage rights, but a question of when.

Old generations are always against equal rights for people that were never considered anywhere near equal when they were younger.

But within 20-30 years, at the very least the vast majority of states will have laws similar to that upheld in the state of Washington.

There will be a lot of hold-outs about the term marriage, as that's a sacred word in some religious circles; but laws as in Washington are fine, that gay couples have identical rights to straight couples except that it's not "marriage."

The younger generation, when they become the old generation, will be on the conservative side of some civil rights issue, but it will be some issue that no one is even thinking about now (and the novelty of it will be precisely the source of their opposition).

    •  sadly, the Obama admin is arguing that (0+ / 0-)

DOMA prevents recognition by the federal government of any marriage-like same sex partnerships even when they are not called "marriage". So no same sex couple can be said to have "identical rights" to mixed sex couples.

      •  That's not even the worst stuff he is arguing. (0+ / 0-)

Two court briefs defending DOMA so far, each saying that denying equal marriage rights to gay people "is not discriminatory" or "is not discrimination."

Plus his official position is "one man, one woman."

The man might be good for America on balance, but he is a proud bigot when it comes to the most important civil rights struggle of the modern age.
