  •  And your point is...? (0+ / 0-)

Hasan could have committed suicide without killing or wounding 43 of his colleagues. I suspect you would not contemplate shouting "God is great," then injuring or killing 43 people before you were to "swallow a bottle of pills."

Sorry, I'm not getting your overall point.

But I do like your "Horton Hears a Who" sig.

    •  No, I wouldn't do that. (0+ / 0-)

My point, I guess, is that some people, for reasons beyond my understanding, choose to kill others before they die themselves. That is what the Columbine boys did. That is what the shooter at Virginia Tech did. I don't understand it, and I think it is deplorable, but it happens.

I'm not saying we should be sympathetic and feel sorry for the guy. In my opinion, if you've got to end it all, do it as cleanly and painlessly as you can, and leave a note. A good friend of my husband's chose to shoot himself in the head with a .22. He missed. That is, he destroyed most of his brain, but he was still alive. He was in the woods near a lake, and wandered, bloody, with half his brain gone, and then fell into the water and drowned. Another friend who found him was arrested at the scene for murder. He was let go a few days later, after the evidence showed it was self-inflicted. But it was a messy, ugly, and cruel death. He left a lot of broken hearts behind, with no answers.

What I am saying is that the St. Hood shooter is clearly mentally ill. He was no jihadist martyr, just a guy who snapped and went psycho.

I really think the rest of the world ( save what-the-fox news) will see this in the same light as the massacres at Columbine and Virginia Tech. And the asshole who shot up that Unitarian church, and that freak who attaked the girls at the Amish school, and that crazy girl who shot up the playground of her elementary school with a rifle through her bedroom window--and then told reporters she did it because, quote, "I don't like mondays."
