    of the bill, much less the law that will be passed. But my understanding was we will have a robust public option with funds provided for us to purchase a fair policy.

      1. If you get your insurance via your workplace currently, you will not be eligible for the public option, or any option that will be on the exchange. This is soley for individuals who buy coverage on their own (very small businesses can also go into the exchange).
      1. IF, you are eligible (which it sounds like you get insurance through work, so you probably aren't), there are affordability subsidies. Those start scaling back at around 200% of poverty level, and are eliminated at 400% of poverty level.

      I don't know if you have a single policy or a family policy, so its hard to say what those exact amounts are for your situation. In reality, you will probably end up paying at least 10% of your income.

      1. None of this (the exhanges, the PO, etc...)even goes into effect until 2013. So do count on making any changes to your budget this year, or for the next 4 years. And then, you'll probably still be barred from purchasing it.

      Question, do you get your insurance from your employer? If so, you'd probably be shocked to find out how much your policy actually really costs.

        We are a less than 40 person shop, but my boss said once this public option comes into being she will go ahead and drop the health insurance since the public option will be available that will be cheaper for us and her. But, damnit, I don't want to have to wait until 2013, I deserve some relief now.

          being all that much cheaper for you, even if your boss does switch over to it. I don't believe you'll be getting any assitance with subsidies, since you are already getting an employer subsidy.

          This is the biggest misconception of the public option, that it is going to be signficantly cheaper and offer similar or better benefits. Unless you have a really generous plan currently, it WILL NOT be cheaper for you.

            no wonder democrats' polls look like crap right now.

            Are ever at the levers again. But from discussing it with my boss, we are hopeful that with progressive Democrats in charge, rates will stay low and subsidies will stay high. In fact, we were discussing that could become a very strong campaign theme. Democrats want a robust public option with generous and fair subsidies with comprehensive coverage while Republicans want no public option or one with high premiums, low subsidies and poor coverage.
