    However, a bit of additional info. The lever machines create a very large sheet of paper that has the vote totals for all of the lines on the ballot.

    Those sheets are examined after tho polls close and the town (city) clerks call in the totals to the BoE(s). The original sheets are then transported to the BoE by the clerks, where the numbers are checked again (re-canvassed).

    It's not unusual for the clerks to make, well... clerical errors in adding up or reading the numbers. It's pretty easy to mis-read an 8 for a 3 (or a zero), or a 1 for a 4, etc. The print is kind of faint.

    For instance, on election night, I won re-election to my town council. The vote totals were Repub # 1: 299,
    Me: 292, Repub #2: 81 (highest two totals win).

    After the re-canvassing, Repub #1 picked up one vote, for a total of 300. Mine stayed the same, as did repub #2.

    34 absentees have been returned, but not counted yet.
