i agree that obama is mesmerizing to watch on the political tightrope. at many times, he is sometimes a really masterful politician who takes the long view, and definitely not some showman. and the wingnuts will lose in the end. they're already eating each other up in florida.

Obama really does have long-term strategy in mind, though he keeps his cards close to his chest-- which is why he frustrates the wingnuts at every turn, who consistently underestimate his subtle farsightedness.

The NY-23 situation was a political masterstroke.  Hard to know if Obama had every detail planned out, but he manipulated the Republicans like marionettes on a string when he chose Owens' predecessor for that appointment.  He was thereby able to take what had been a simmering internal GOP feud, and cast it wide open by pitting the Teabaggers against the remaining sensible Republicans.

Obama is truly brilliant in his intuitive grasp of political and strategic subtlety, and given the media superficiality these days, I'm sensing that most commentators won't "get" this until after Obama leaves office.  He's been a master at tapping these subtle undercurrents since his Chicago days, and he's probably figured out the GOP's ultimate weakness right now-- in allowing Rush, Beck, and Palin to steer the party, the Bluebloods unleashed a monster that they can't control.  And it's inherently self-destructive for the Rethugs, since the very anti-intellectualism that they espouse, also makes it impossible for them to sensibly coordinate strategy, pitting the ideological purists against the party officials.  As you say, Florida is prime terrain for this, as is Illinois, CT, CA and probably most of the nation soon enough.
