    The virus hit early and hard here, in part because of our proximity to Mexico, where it was already established in the population.

      has intentionally overlooked, dismissing at as "not the point" of this diary. Living in El Paso, I know we were one of the first hardest hit regions because we're literally right next to Mexico and much of our population either travels over to Mexico frequently or comes into contact with people traveling to here from Mexico on a daily basis. We do need serious improvements in health care here, but the foremost reason we were so badly first and so early on had to do with proximity, not politics.
