  •  My dear LOE (0+ / 0-)

When I started in the public sector, I made only slightly more than I had been making taking classified ads for the local newspaper. (Obviously that was pre-Craigslist!)

If I had student loans to pay at that time, I would have crashed and burned. I couldn't have afforded the type of work I do! Especially with a family to support.

Others getting out of law school and going to classy firms were making 3-4x what I made, or more!

So, yes, if you have to pay off huge student loans in addition to keeping a roof over your head, all the while in the profession to help the less fortunate, it can be very difficult.

$40-50K sounds like a lot, until you take various necessary expenses off the top-- like the loan that got you your bar card in the first place. That payment may be more than your rent and car expenses combined !

Oh, and I don't buy my clothes at the fancy stores, either-- Target or Ross is more like it. And I drive a fairly high efficiency used car-- can't afford a new hybrid.

Yes, most of my clients have much less than I do. But my education is what makes it possible for me to help them in the first place.

    I must be dreaming...
