the skin color of most of the people in that segment of Countdown. I'm white, and the racial aspect of health care reform is not lost on me. This is the legacy of Ronald Reagan, their hero.

My denomination had a Community Service convocation in the DC area, followed by seminars in the afternoon. I was trying to work out scheduling with someone who is a staffer for a Senate Democrat but couldn't make it fit so I gave the seminar on health care reform.
Many in attendance still had the idea that it was the 'freeloader' who would benefit... and that people lacked healthcare because they didn't work...

Then I pointed out to them that I have a job with a 6 figure salary and I have no healthcare. My wife works full-time and she has no healthcare... and because I have hypertension and my wife has diabetes and had a brain tumor removed 2 years ago... as long as insurance companies can exclude based on preexisting conditions it would be damned difficult for us to get coverage... so yeah; I have a personal stake in reform if for no other reason than preexisting condition exclusions need to go the way of the Dodo ASAP.

I pointed out the majority of those without insurance were not that different from my wife and I... the overwhelming majority work and due to circumstances beyond their control they don't have health insurance.

I spent the better part of an hour debunking the lies that have been put out there by the insurance lobby and their paid shills in congress... I gave out the summary of the bill that the Kaiser Foundation has on their website and exhorted those attending to take that information back to their churches and disseminate it to their members... and I'd like to think that if I didn't swing many over to our side, I at least have got them thinking...
