  •  Jesus as Panacea for all ills (4+ / 0-)

Driving through the Southland a few weeks ago, I noticed big billboards saying something like "Depressed? Lonely? Unhappy? Problems?" Then in big letters: Accept Jesus as Your Savior! with a phone number.

But what if you do that, and you are still depressed, lonely, and unhappy? And if being stuck in a cycle of poverty isn't a problem, I don't know what one is.  Maybe you get a little lift from the emotion of religion but the core problems are still there. I guess you go back to the well for more 'lift', and then you start paying for it, and another evangelist has a new name for their mailing list.

Jesus is hawked like a patent nostrum from a medicine-show wagon. For some people, maybe it will help but the majority wind up with an empty bottle and an emptier wallet.

in Alabama. There are several good ones between Tuscaloosa and Columbus, MS, but they say "Repent! King Jesus is coming soon" or similar.

A phone number for you to call and tell Jesus you're accepting him is way better. Or maybe I'm just punch drunk from overwork and lack of sleep and end of the semester blues.

when I tell them just how many times in my life I've prayed the Sinner's Prayer.

It was a bad year in school after I prayed to receive Christ. Being a small child, I figured it hadn't stuck and kept trying. And trying. And trying.

That 'Jesus will make everything better RIGHT NOW' stuff is damaging even to people who honestly believe it.

Hoping and praying that the empty chairs and empty tables in Iran when all is said and done are as few as possible.
