almost 15,000.  but the rich totally pay their "fair share" of taxes, donchyaknow!

I know reccing a diary feels like forwarding a funny email, but the rec list can only hold 8 items, unlike email inboxes. Think before you rec!

snappy comment about my Swiss account not being disclosed, but I am so broke I could not think of anything funny.

    •  What's rich got to do with it? (0+ / 0-)

This law taxes any American citizen who makes foreign earned income.  On top of the taxes paid to the country where it is earned.  A bizarre law.

I know a tax fraud in the same vein in Australia.  She is a hairdresser, and has lived in Australia since she was a teenager.  She is supposed to pay both Australian AND US income tax on her earnings because she still holds an American passport.

      Except she never has.

This law forces me to live in the US.  My Australian husband does not have to pay Australian taxes on money he earns here in the US, but I sure as shit have to pay taxes to both the Australian govt and the US government if I lived there.

This law is bullshit if you ask me.

      •  Not sure that's what this is about (1+ / 0-)

As far as I know, this story is about wealthy Americans (mostly living in the US) who try to hide their assets in Swiss banks (aka "tax shelters") to avoid paying taxes.

I don't think it has anything to do with regular people working overseas.  These are big fish we are talking about.

I'm not sure about having to pay taxes in both countries.  That just doesn't sound right...
