    would be very much our enemy except for the fact that we happen to have armed forces where they live (funny how people tend to resent that). I certainly don't want us in some endless fight against them. Their alliance with Al Qaeda is a problem, as is the danger of them taking Pakistan, but Al Qaeda is reduced to a tiny handful and Pakistan can probably defend itself.

    However, if we leave abruptly and the Taliban gets the opportunity to retake Afghanistan, we're not just morally culpable for what happens then, we're setting ourselves up for some major trouble down the road. If we did pull back into a defensive stance around selected urban centers, not only would we no longer be fueling their desire to fight, but it would make it easier to withdraw later, assuming that violence actually decreased.
